.... starting to see the end: a collaborative retreat.
Relocation by Invitation
anneevy collaboration with Anne Haaland Bland. Documentation by Elizabeth Croft.
An apartment belonging to Norwegian expats was lent to us for two weeks to create an art event. In the borrowed apartment, we built 480 removal boxes into a large labyrinth with narrow passages, where the sparse amount of furniture was built into our new walls. We created a complicated entry exploring bureaucracy with appointments to enter for 20 minutes at a specific time, Visitors had to present their access cards that we sent them by mail once they had made an appointment. We placed guards at the doors. Groups of up to 5 people were let into the space for 20 minutes. When the visitors left they were handed an invitation to a meeting about the project a week later, here they were invited to talk about what they felt was essential to take with them when traveling or moving. Documented hypoxic (oxygen-depleted) zones, now more than 500 in the world, are doubling every year, causing fish mortality. Although it can occur naturally, hypoxia is most frequently caused by eutrophication, i.e., the overloading of waters with nutrients, especially nitrogen, phosphorous and silicon and/or organic matter. Major sources of this nutrient pollution are agriculture and livestock production, sewage and industrial waste, plus additional complex temperature and water exchange impacts from climate change. Nutrient effects on water oxygen levels are exacerbated when local water bodies become stratified and mixing of layers is prevented. The map shows the location of systems that remain hypoxic (red circles), systems that are eutrophic and therefore at risk of becoming hypoxic (yellow circles), and systems that have recovered from hypoxia (green circles), primarily through reduction of nutrient loads."
